Method of Administration

  • Subcutaneous Injections (Allergy Shots): This involves injecting small amounts of allergens under the skin, typically in the arm. The injections are initially given more frequently (usually weekly) and then less frequently as maintenance (every few weeks).
  • Sublingual Drops (Allergy Drops): These drops are placed under the tongue daily. They contain extracts of allergens that you are allergic to. The dose usually starts low and increases gradually.

Effectiveness

  • Subcutaneous Injections: Allergy shots are highly effective in reducing allergy symptoms and can provide long-term relief even after treatment stops. They are particularly useful for people with severe allergies or those who do not respond well to medications.

  • Sublingual Drops: Allergy drops are also effective, especially for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic asthma. They can be a convenient option for those who prefer at-home treatment and are unable to commit to frequent clinic visits for shots.

Safety

  • Subcutaneous Injections: They are generally safe but must be administered by a healthcare professional due to the risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).

  • Sublingual Drops: They are considered safe and can be administered at home after the initial prescription and guidance from a healthcare provider.
